No gym, now what?

No gym, now what?

Due to the coronavirus, many countries now decided that people have to stay inside as much as possible. Especially the gym is a place where this virus loves to live and will be easily spread. So what do we do now? Not workout anymore? That is an option of course ๐Ÿ˜‰ But we will give you some tips on how you can still proceed your workouts but then at home!ย

How do we usually workout?

Let’s first tell a bit about our regular working out program. We don’t really follow a strict program or schedule, this differs per time. To be honest, I think we both have kind of a love and hateย relationship with the gym! A couple of years ago I (Marit) hated the gym and you could never find me there. I loved running and was almost addicted to it…ย  Then Anna dragged me to the gym. She already went quite regularly and said that it was time for me to try it as well. I took some time, but it worked! Then I have to say, working out together is so much more fun and motivating. Then, we both moved to a different city, so working out together was no option anymore. We still wanted to workout, but had to find our own way.ย

So how do we do this?

First of all, when you go to the gym on a regular basis and you don’t want to follow the group lessons anymore, then try to find someone who can teach you how to do exercises! In the beginning I really felt like a headless chicken (does this also work in English?)…ย  Because I had no clue what to do or how things worked, I just hated the gym. I went there, did some exercises, felt bored, just trying to fill my time there thinking what to do next… Basically, one hour felt like forever! But luckily I found a gym partner who could explain me everything. It sounds stupid, but because of this working out gets more fun because you understand it better.

To keep motivated with working out, we always keep track of the exercises we do and the weights we use. We do this by listing the exercises + weights in the notes on our phone. Then, every time we go to the gym, we know where we left last time and you know if you can improve your performance of last time. Believe us, this works really motivating!ย

Next to this, try to structure your workout by assigning body-part workouts to your days. For example, if you workout 3 times a week, then start with your lower body, the second workout can be an upper body workout and the last one a full body workout. And we think that most of all, don’t try to force yourself! It is good to push yourself a bit sometimes, but if you only force yourself, you’re not gonna like it!ย

But where do we get inspiration from?ย  Simple, Google, Instagram and so on. Right now, I am training with a kind of schedule. I don’t follow it completely, but it helps me to keep me motivated. Also, with this scheme I know what to do at the gym! The scheme that I use is a scheme where you have to workout 5-6 times a week (!) Sorry but with a busy work and social life, this is not possible. To be honest, I don’t even want this. I just workout when I feel like and just use this scheme to structure my workout.ย

The scheme works great. It divides the days based on the parts of the body you have to train. It has a big variety of exercises and it even contains links with instruction videos so you know exactly how to do the exercises!ย

But what now?  If we can’t go to the gym, what do we do?

These days it might be better to avoid the gym… Some may be sad, some may be happy ๐Ÿ˜‰ What about you? If you are sad, then don’t be! The possibilities to workout are still endless! You can go for a run outside, but we understand that not everyone loves running. Maybe you are not able to do your regular workout sessions, but believe us, home workouts can be great as well. At least, you don’t have to pull yourself from the couch and have to bike รกll the way to the gym (what an effort that can be!).

First of all, you may be able to do some of the exercises mentioned in the scheme you can find via the link above. It can be that you don’t have all the equipment, but with a little creativity you will manage. On Instagram you can find a lot of ‘fitgirls’ who are posting home workouts. They are just great! We will share two with you that we really like:

Have you ever tried yoga before? If you want to take it easier, then we can also recommend a really nice yoga page on YouTube! I was always a bit skeptical about yoga to be honest… I thought is was a bit spiritual and everything, but actually I love it! You can do it the way you want it and the way you like it. It is so relaxing and you can kind of shut your brain off which feels so good after a long and stressful day!ย

We really recommend the page ‘Yoga with Adriene’. She has great videos for beginners but also for advanced people. Next to that, she creates her videos based on certain topics which works really nice! Definitely worth to check it out ๐Ÿ™‚ย
